  • What does the Ebola virus actually do in your body? Why is it so dangerous and why does it kill so many people? We take a look at the apocalyptic war that rages in the body after an infection by the Ebola virus and the soldiers fighting.
Videos, explaining things. Like evolution, time, space, global energy or our existence in this strange universe.

Ebola is an excellent example of a virus being _too_ effective at messing up its host. It causes such obvious effects, and is so deadly, that it prevents itself from spreading far during an outbreak.
The 1918 flu pandemic was far, far worse, in terms of lives lost.
Smallpox was much worse, too, but now it's gone -- can we hope to say the same for things like Ebola, Marsburg, and other nasty, recent entrants into the pantheon of pathogenic horrors?

Stupid question: so if you survive ebola a bunch of times (nearly impossible) will your immune system get used to it and fight ebola from now on easily? Which means u mate and we evolve to fight ebola o.o

  • Michael Clark
    Michael Clark 17 days ago

Someone else has probably said this, but I can't find it so I'll say it again. Since this video was published, a vaccine was tested in the outbreak before the one that just broke out. It was amazingly successful, apparently 100%. They vaccinated people exposed to people with ebola. None of those people got sick. That rate will certainly be reduced with a larger sample size, but the bottom line is that the vaccine can protect from ebola. It works.
Unfortunately it has to be stored at -80C, which limits storage and distribution. Now that we know a vaccine can work, new versions are being developed that can be stored more easily, So more reason for a co-ordinated effective response to ebola outbreaks, and ever less reason for panic.
