I kind of have a problem with your definition. What you would call altruism I would call investment.
An investment is egoistic, altruism is by definition not egoistic.
Let's take your cancer example. If you give money to a bunch of people to enable them to buy medicine you have less money to spend on medicine, you gave it to someone else. In the end the total amount of capital available to be spend on medicine stays the same. The only way giving money to others would increase the total amount would be if that money allowed them to get more productive. But as said such thing would be an investment not an act of altruism.

If poor countries get richer , they are sure gonna increase the global pie . But , now the richer countries will have to compete with them..in every products.
Even though , trade is a positive sum game, still one country might always fall in trade deficits....unless they make a VeRy good product or provide better services than other countries.

You can't see the reason behind this video can you, sad, you need wisdom. You're being controlled and you can't even see it.

  • Nomoturtle furnishing

I don't know what the fuck you people are doing with your money in the developed world. My overall costs in life are £15,000 a year, including constant entertainment, and I'm a student at university. Once I'm out of Uni I'll be spending under £10k on supporting myself, and in the UK I'll be hoping for at least the typical average salary of £27,000, but will likely get higher at some STEM job. I'll probably invest part of that so I can cushion any future problems, and just chuck the rest at whatever I think is important at the time, be that your typical kids in Africa, or spaceX, or a patreon fund to Michael Reeves. Heck, maybe I'll give it to the government, they're all drowning in debt.
But that's me, I understand all you raunchy bastards want kids. So let's give you an average of 1.4 kids, to replace yourself and anyone that dies before/without having kids. These little pricks cost a fortune, so lets put them at £2000/year (was going to say 5k, but you'd only be paying for them about 1/3 of your work-life) and another £2000/year towards your retirement. We also have to look at taxes. I'll give that 20% before all deductions.
So, taking all that together, your average selfish arsehole in the UK gets a rough surplus of £6,800 to do whatever with. If you use your spare time to do any creative projects or rent out space or invest or anything like that it can be more. Or you can ignore providing money and instead work for free yourself.
And Murrica, quit spending that shit on military, you have a problem.
There's also GDP per capita you can look at. That shit is way higher than your typical cost of existence per person. Where does it go?

  • Nomoturtle furnishing

No. If I help others reach a standard of living where they're not tied to their needs but instead contribute to research, then yes, they'll improve life overall in the future. However if I spend 40 years of my life getting maybe 5,000 people well off, so that maybe 10 of them can then be researchers and possibly improve medicine to ideally cure whatever I may have died of in the future and extend my life by a small number of years until the disease they weren't able to cure gets me. I've been fairly favourable to this argument so far, but even then, 40>1-10, and any QOL improvements I get from these additional workers is minimal compared to the amount of time I'd lose enabling them.
If everyone were to help others by even a small amount and I merely contributed my part, it would be a totally different story. But that's not a selfish argument, that's a co-operative one. I simply receive greater personal benefit to myself by focusing my efforts on myself.

A nice idea, but it can't work because greedy C.E.O's, pharmaceutical companies, defense contractors, big petroleum, and even greedier Wall Street Bankers wouldn't be able to subjugate and dominate 99 percent of the population like they do now. Their own need to be alpha is so highly protected that it's basically ingrained in society. These type of people will NEVER let benevolence, empathy, altruism, compassion, and humanitarianism trump (no pun intended) good old American capitalistic GREED.

however in this piece you assume a mostly rational and educated people to want the same thing. that’s not the case i think. you have to factor in a culture of cultivated ignorance, passivity and corruption in large parts of sub-saharan africa, a clerico/ political ideology hostile to science in most north- african and arabian states and an increasingly cynic and opressive (yet high tech) oligarcy in china. i don’t think it’s safe to assume they want (or even think about) the same stuff that we do in western societys. and they are a large chunk of humanity.

The fact that this video are financially supported by Bill Gate´s foundation, speak for itself. I am not suprise with the main argument of this piece of crap: capitalism is ok, nothing has happening, and, soon, we will walk together in the fields with fairies and unicorns.
In the capitalism, we have many social issues, like the profit accumulation, and the bad distribution of resources. People are enslaved to produce chocolate, Ipod and nike t-shirts. We can solve the main world issues accepting, like true, this optmistic point of view, accepting the capitalism like your savior?

One word why other countries are not getting better: CORRUPTION.
As much help we give other countries most of the benefits will go to the rich or the government as they take all the money and dont put it back into the country.

    • saintlugia
      saintlugia Hour ago

true, but you are looking at the solution through a certain lens. You can have a corrupt government and still have a high GDP. Companies will gladly put up with Government corruption if the profit can be made. The American film industry knows China is not giving them the proper amount of money they should from their movies, but take what they can get so that they can still get the world's largest population to see their movies. Speaking of china back in the 70's china was an economic disaster, but because the west shipped jobs overseas the Chinese economy increased and prosperity of life for the average worker increased. That lead to an increase in spending power that caused products that was once just manufactured in china to be sold to its' people. And because of the increase in spending power china has begun investing Africa to manufacture goods for them hopefully causing the same ripple effect to happen helping Africa.

  • Luiz Alex Phoenix
Luiz Alex Phoenix 18 days ago

Long term this is the most sensible choice. The issue is that people on both extremes of the social ladder tend to think in short term.
After all, someone who has everything he could ever want and no worries, can do virtually anything he feels like it or simply find an alternative. While, in the extreme polar opposite, someone whose survival is a daily task, can't let up to think about fifty years from now, rather focusing on making to tomorrow.
Now, it doesn't mean they don't have long term goals. It's just that a billionaire can subside his wish for space travel via the many other ameneties he has access to and even simulation. While a beggar still needs warm clothing for winter but will trade it for food and water to survive a schorching summer.
Now, the issue becomes getting both of those, as well as the ones in the middle, to think about common ground. It's intrinsicaly hard, as natural selection and competition has created an extremely competitive race where those who let up get clobbered in the head. After all, common ground means trusting and cooperating with someone, that is risky.
Personally, I have little practical idea of how making that a reality within my own radius of influence. Much less how to reshape a global society and the species currently in control of it. My best guess would be the already mentioned issue of health and food. As well as knowledge, e.g. cientia (the word science is just knowledge and the fact that so many people use it without knowing is a very clear sign that it's not properly spread).
In many ways, we have reached the new height in those fields and it might seem pointless to push forward. Yet, the reality is that disease is still a big risk for everyone in this world and that culinary is still a prized field no matter the social degree, even though the requirements vary strongly. And knowledge of those fields are strongly dependent on others while it's still important to maintain the current one.
So, I imagine that we can find common goals in more than just curing cancer, that we could also agree in finding new tastes while preserving others. After all, medicine is an always evolving field, as we fight an arms race with a big plethora of ailments. While culinary is determined by ingredients, which can find and create or protect and destroy. And it's necessary to research other items to properly advance our knowledge of those.
Now, starting from the pressumption that we find such a common cause, we would need to first spread through our own community and range of influence. For it inherently depends on convincing from the inside of each group spreading the ideology to new ones, starting from the middle until reaching the extremes.
It's ironically similar to the spread of pathogens. Except that this would be a positive force for each person that comes in contact with it and starts spreading it further. That shows other issues, like the need to differentiate positive from negative strains of this base idea and how to better enforcing it.
In this case and from this perspective, it becomes very clearly more defined and finally taking the shape of something whose definitions are also full of secondary meanings: politics and religion.
Now, I also don't feel qualified to deeply think about it. But I would like to take a positive point from this, perhaps a silver lining. The idea that this crazy wish for a better world might be really hard to achieve and much easier to mess up. Yet, nonetheless, it's universal for all of us. And that the several stumbles and setbacks we have suffered and even self caused, were important steps in trying to achieve this goal.
Admitelly, it's a really positive optimistic take. But, when we are so deeply entrenched in pain or pleasure, I doubt it will be a chastising or a lecturing voice that will convince us more than the offer of a better place and a better feeling... The wish for a better world.

Really appreciate the low income with weak economic strength and seeing people suffer from loan sharks just to send their children to school and university. In a society where people depend badly on education just to get a job that can provide essentials for the family is hard without it were just trash that no one wants and better off dead. Ambition is a luxury that only the rich kids can pick like art and other stupid hipster jobs it sometimes pisses you off why they don't just takeover their parents business while the people at the bottom must pick a job that is more realistic and beneficial for the family neither you like it or not. For that thank you first world countries your freedom make our third world countries poor and miserable with some of our people homeless and starving.

Great idea (which I support) but there is a "little" wrinkle to it: The monetary system. In our monetary system it is mathematically impossible for everyone to do well. One person having 100 dollars (or whatever) means that another person is 100 dollars (plus interest) in debt. As long as we use this pyramid scheme of money, there will be no such world as you describe it. Even in the best possible scenario you would have 50% with a little money and 50% being in debt. Therefore, there can't be 7 billion people caring about the same things as you since at least half of them will always be dirt poor. I understand this might be difficult to grasp for the people doing these videos as can be seen in their video about money which shows that they are completely oblivious to how money really works. :(

If 7 billion people invest in a thing I want, I do not have any incentives to invest myself as I am going to get the thing anyway. Naturally, almost everyone starts doing that at some point, so the thing in question does not appear as quickly as it could. This is known as the tragedy of commons, and knowledge (in this case it might be a technology to produce the thing) is a common good, at least in part. So, it follows that only those who are genuinely willing to pay must have the knowledge. The governments in poorer countries are less likely to be interested in any technology apart from ways of money laundering. Then, it is not in the best interest of developed countries to give cheap or free resources to poorer countries. The argument only holds for investors who can earn a greater return on investment in underdeveloped countries, an ordinary taxpayer in many cases cannot be interested in sending his/her money abroad for the sake of 'humanity'. It is better for them when some new infrastructure is built in their place of residence.
However, this is a great video with extremely high quality graphics.

What about inflation? I agree that everyone being rich in wealth and science would make the world a much better place, but what about the core problem of people raising prices if they can make more money, etc. Does this idea of making the whole world a better place require people to limit their selfishness for long-term gain? If so, would this even be possible? It seems to me that those who are looking for an overall gain do so with the intent of getting that gain as soon as possible, not necessarily worrying about those that their decisions might affect. This sort of world that is good all around definitely seems possible, but it also seems as if humanity would have some things to change about itself first.

This works the other way as well. By being selfish--given that you don't cheat rules--you will want to accumulate capital. By definition, the amount of capital you own is how much value you have provided to others. But you're right about the long term outlook.

I like the argument a lot. However what about the earth's demising resources and ability to cope with our industrial output? will more innovation give us solutions to global warming, or only higher energy demands, higher emissions? The same could be applied to waste, extraction of minerals and fossil fuels etc.... The wealthy western world might be better off however we produce a disproportionate amount of the world's environmental damage. Why would we assume that if the rest of the world was not more affluent that they too would not want styrofoam, plastics, and other product that inevitable end up polluting the world and especially our oceans? I think to simply say that we live in a positive sum world is limiting our problems and civilization's problems to the ones measured by economic growth and education.

The more people that are happy, the less exclusive my happiness is. My happiness is directly proportional to its exclusivity. Therefore, I should oppose all forms of progress for the population to retain my happiness!
