What a load of crap. If combined 35 billion people in China India and African continent suddenly became as wealthy as US and demand to eat same amount of meat and living standards, there isnt enough Earth to sustain it. Meat and commodity price would skyrocket, and as a result everyone would end up eating and having far less than average American today. Its still a zero sum game.

But the equation change again, our world is limited in raw material and energy and we are destroying it. We can't grow forever (in the industry I mean).
Now it's even more, you need other people to be altruist in order to have a better life.

I truely love the concept, but imo this is NOT a positive sum game
Natural resources will halt this growth pace. humanity just consumes as many metrials as possible
while causing many harms to the global environment. this WILL be stoped in a very brutal way perhaps in less than 100 years.

    can someone explain
if the developing countries where people are paid well below minimum wage and have below par living conditions , who create clothing and technology for such low cost (in respect to developed/western countries), began to develop - would those in the developed countries not have to pay exponentially more for such goods?
i guess this would drive demand to create technologies to reduce production costs but until complete automation of clothing and technology production is attained, human labour costs are inevitable, and in a developed country with a minimum wage this is not feasable for items such as our smart phones.
Would that therefore mean it is still in the best interest of developed countries (financially - in respect to affordability of technology for arguements sake) to have disadvantaged economies to exploit for their benefit?

Just on the subject of cancer for a minute. Try to imagine worldwide, roughly how sizable the sum is of money that has been raised by various organisations towards a cancer cure? The figure would be astronomical. Surely we must know this disease with the most intimate of knowledge by now!

What about the cultural issues? Selfishness is very vague when you say selfishness here your talking about improving your own life while not harming other people's life. But what about selfishness that doesn't care about hurting people while getting what they want. Democracy, really the Representative Republic, we have in the U.S. has not transferred as smoothly as as anyone would like to so called "third world countries". The founders here believed that the people had to already be prepared for that form of government in order for it to have any chance of functioning and even then it still had ENORMOUS issues, it is not smooth but any means. But then what about third world countries where the population doesn't even have that foundation our founders had it leads to nothing but a corrupt government. You could say "that people are adaptable, they will adjust". But that is an ideal, in reality people are not adaptable, individuals are adaptable and through multiple generations culture is changed through the persistence of individual change. Poeple resist change. Individuals inspire change. Thank you for responding, if you do respond, even though this question moves the conversation from economic ideal systems to a pragmatic government/cultural conversation.

Well, I could also argue that the ONLY reason life today is so good is because we invented nuclear weapons, not because of the Industrial revolution. Remember that the bloodiest wars in history happened just 60 years ago. Well inside the so called "Post industrial age". It was not a zero sum game that countries annihilated each other. It is just that today, we literally CAN wipe each other out with nuclear weapons. So facing that choice, countries, and people, in the nuclear weapons age behave. Remove the atom bombs and we go back to barbarity.

OK people are getting more education which results in an increase in inventors researchers etc, etc...
However what if too many people become an inventor ?
Who would do the work at fundmental levels ?
Who would do the basic jobs ?
I mean if a sheep has food is safe and is healthy ... why would it work ?
The obvious answer is technology will take over....but what if it takes over too much....BOOM!TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTER.....
So my point is Why can't we regulate manforce and divide chores up and make sure everybody does what they are supposed to ?

PS :- Whoever is reading this might think What type of weed have I snorted up my àss.....i can assure you I didn't.....i was just wondering :P

The "pie" in the video is not a pie,it's a cake

  • Ryan Horne
    Ryan Horne 15 days ago

This theory assumes the "pie" can grow forever, the positive sum game. The reality is the pie has always been the same size (the planets resources), technological innovation enables us to access larger portions of the pie, it doesn't increase the pies size. If positive sum were a reality, we wouldn't have the resource wars and economic exploitation we see so frequently today. People are acting out of self interest as the video suggests they should. The proposition made is sadly a fantasy. We can't just "create" pie for everyone, nothing is created, it's here already. Expanding the pie for others is unrealistic, a more accurate analogy is to divide the pie more evenly. Unfortunately, we still fight with our neighbors and take their stuff as we always have because the pie never grew, and it never will. Dividing the pie more evenly isn't an act of self interest it doesn't happen.

So all this based on a belief that all people are basically the same and everyone has potantial to become innovator.
