In past decades, Christopher Columbus has gone from unquestioned US hero to problematic figure. For centuries, the destruction and disease he ushered into the Americas have been set aside, allowing the myth of a pioneering sailor who discovered America and proved the world was round to embed itself in US culture. But as this myth has been increasingly confronted with brutal historical facts, things have started to change.
While Columbus still has a national holiday in his honor, complete with parades and celebrations, there are many people fighting to dismantle the myth that surrounds him and choosing to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead.
Watch this video to understand how Columbus became a US icon over time and why his status is in question today.

Correction: At 00:32 we incorrectly say that Columbus never set foot on North American soil. Columbus landed in Central America and the Caribbean which are both regions in North America. We meant to say that Columbus never reached the United States. We regret the error.

@driftwolf there is a reason Europeans took over the world. They are, to put it simply, smarter. All the European tribes United to become several massive tribes making all the little tribes around the world childsplay. They fought each other for centuries too you know. Because that is what human tribes have done since the beginning of time. Fought over territory and recourses.

Columbus did not do anything bad to the natives, its the people who came after him, the people who came to conquer land for Spain, Portugal, England and France. This video shows the victimised american view of him, just beacuse he was the first european to set foot in central america doesnt mean he was the killer, he was a guy who just wanted to find a different route for trade, he had no clue that he will discover unknown teritories or that after him other will come and conquer those teritories and kill the native population. When Columbus first set foot in America he didnt even know it was a new continent he thought he was in India, only later did Amerigo Vespucci said that he found a new continent

picolo2022 Games Is it? Columbus didn’t find the United States and had no reason to believe it existed. The US is the only country that celebrates Columbus Day, yet he never discovered any part of the US. If you’re going to use that argument, then Mexico or Cuba should celebrate it, not us. Or should we no have a Lief Erickson Day, since the Vikings were the first people to find the actual US.

  • American Freedom World Peace

90% of comments are mostly white sympathizers who are trying to come up with an excuse about Columbus Day.. fake patriotism at it's finest, they rather believe a fake lie about their hero and hide behind a flag instead of accepting the truth.

  • American Freedom World Peace

A lot of triggered sympathizers are kinda offended by the truth behind Columbus Day.. this is the same as when they learned about the truth of the Civil War and why it all started (because of slavery). I think many white Americans want to feel patriotic and proud, however, their historical past was violent, brutal, and a disgrace and many of their ancestors committed heinous acts. That doesn't mean YOU are evil, we all are now Americans and we value truth, honesty, and integrity. We all probably had evil or criminal ancestors, but that doesn't mean we are evil or bad. It's important to remember what happened and the truth behind it, not create and believe in a false story to make you feel better about yourself.

I guess we just have to check the amount of indigenous population and the average percentage of indigenous DNA in Central and South America (mainly conquered by the Spanish empire) and then check those numbers in north American (where the English did their conquering).
I understand that somebody to blame all the killings did in America conquest is Needed, but i just find funny that indigenous genocide did in north America by the English is hardly commented leaving all the blame for the Spanish.

I understand that what happened in Americas conquest was one of the worst episodes of Human history. But be straight with the facts. While in Central and South America indigenous population is mixed with white foreign people, in North America indigenous population is reduced to a tiny percentage of population.

I would like to say that not all said in there was completely true. The Columbus Day is a celebration that alludes the day two civilizations became one in this enormous new land, of course there was mistreatment by some of the new conquistadores that were constantly arriving, but instantly shutted down by the spanish crown, that proclaimed a state of vassalage for the indians, just like was occurring in Castilla at that time; in other words, they applied the law. The first conquistadores, with Francisco Pizarro, Hernán Cortés or Alonso de Ojeda among them, broke the slavery the aztec empire had imposed to most of the inhabitants of these lands, condemned it repeatedly (Leyes de Burgos, Leyes Nuevas and Leyes de Indias) and conceeded viceroyalties, making new citizens of the kingdom, which granted rights. There were massacres, but unfortunately in no man's land under no one's controle and rule, tho Columbus, as well as the nations' rulers, had nothing to do with that, in fact they regulated its prohibition asap. It was a huge advance in a time where the whole base of European sistem was vassalage, or medieval semi-slavery, in which you belonged to the land and were tied to its owner. We celebrate (in iberoamerican culture is known as Día de la Hispanidad) the unification of two worlds becoming one and obviate the Black Legend, as study of history has proved we should, and focus in what unites us, rather than which guy is in the statue or in the holiday's name.

It wasn't a peaceful encounter but which encounter like this could be PEACEFUL?. Vox needs to check more facts and history to try to understand this matter.

O.,K. Here we go........Columbus and the Spaniards who are all POS by the way arrived in the Americas and landed on the Islands of Hispaniola ( Dominican Republic) Cuba and P.R. etc. They NEVER EVER stepped foot on U.S. soil so let's get that straight!! They encountered Indigenous Tribes known as Tainos / Caribe's and perhaps others as well but mostly Tainos. They took kindness for weakness and enslaved, Tortured, Killed and Raped many of the woman and the Babies were feed to the Dogs for food. Many committed suicide and many fled to different parts of the Island. The history books say they are Extinct but that's not what happen through assimilation and the mixing of Spaniards and Africans and Tainos they were Diluted to the Max and are now Boricuas / Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, etc... They lost their language and culture because the Spaniards destroyed everything they found to them it was EVIL or Satanic, They committed Genocide all in the name of Christianity! They sailed to central and South America and did the same thing to them....Mayans / Incas / Aztec. They were Conquistadors and they job was to take land and Gold and claim it for the Spanish Crown ( Spain). I'm P.R. and my DNA consist of......32% Italy and Spain, 28% Greek and Portugal, 17% African / Senegal, 8% Great Britain, 1% Irish, etc....BUT 11% Native American / Taino. All of the Caribbean people have similar traits some vary of course. Tainos came from Venezuela and moved around the Islands. So, when you look at it in hind sight we are ALL RELATED TO THE NATIVE AMERICANS IN THE U.S. just born and lived in different locations that's all we are all from the same POT!! That is why everyone in the Caribbean and in Central and South America speak Spanish well most not all some kept their Indigenous language and many dialects. For the exception of Brazil ( Portuguese ) and Belize. Shame on the U.S. for sugar coating and lying and Bullshitting the rest of us in the Public School system with Nonsense and Stupidity in regards to Columbus!

Columbus is the reason why we came to the Americas he's the first European to discover this continent. Therefore, people need to stop getting mad for no reason over this fact. So what Native Americans died, it always been the Survivor the fittest. These Native Americans used to conquer each other. Now people want an Indian day then they should make another day for Indians but leave Columbus alone. There's nothing wrong about him.

There is also evidence that the Scandinavians inhabited Greenland until the 14th century. The Vikings that landed there had a name for the natives. "Skralings" which roughly translates into "little ugly people" lol. I learned this stuff from college and I just thought I would share it.

I was taught in Central America to hate the Spanish. Then I grew up, grew a beard, realized I was 100 percent Spanish because of my Spanish beard and other evidence, and learned more about my past, seeing how glorious it was. Columbus was a devil worshiper Knight Templar whose ships La Niña, La Pinta y La Santa María displayed, if ubiquitous illustrations are based on the truth, the Templar cross showing their mission was to establish masonry in other lands, not so much Catholicism which also uses the Templar cross because the Templars aka elite so-called "free"masons who call themselves "ILLUMINATI" also control Catholicism which is idolatrous making Mary a goddess in effect.
Everyone who says they are against slavery is a hypocrite when they are silent about terrorist Muslims made prisoners of war. Captives are slaves.
The Spanish were in a global war against Islam. If Spain did not conquer what it did, Muslims like the Turks may have gotten there first. Spain was not going to sit idly by and let Islam grow in strength making the Reconquista pointless. Spain improved the civilization of the Natives who were in some cases cannibals or sacrificed humans. Spain taught of racial equality, that all come from Adam. The Spanish mingled with the Natives unlike the British norm. Spain defended the Philippines from Muslim invaders from Brunei and elsewhere. Filipinos would be bowing to Mecca five times a day if not for my people who improved their civilization, united them and gave them chocolate from Aztec lands conquered. Except for some bad apples among the Spanish who deserved torture and death, the Spanish did not kill Natives unless the Natives were hostile to the agents of improved civilization and protection from Islam or human sacrificers or what have you. Ironically, if Muslims took over Spain, land of my ancestors, and executed the libtards in the government and their libtarded army who disgrace Spain, I would be glad to see justice there.

So basically a few hundred of conquistadors conquered lands of millions with their own hands. No help from the native tribes at all. Damn, these spaniards were super humans? Come on... Do not insult the intelligence. They were IN CONSTANT fightings. Aztec/Inca Empires were subduing the surrounding tribes, which was used by the spanish as an advantage.

Guys, you are decontextualizing stuff, you shoud study more history, really. Columbus has done nothing wrong in the eyes of a man of his time. You are the ones that are judging a man using your own modern values. Every civilization had slaves, Aztecs had them, it was normal. The word "slave" came from "slav", becouse slavs were common slaves in medieval time, and they were white, but it was not important at the time. When ancient greeks conquered another greek city, they could decide to kill all males and sell every one else like slaves, so, i guess, now we have problems with columns...
