I'm an American and have resided in Hong Kong since the 80's. I have experienced HK under colonial rule, then eleven years later, on July 1st, 1997, the handover back to China. Although things had been changing, very subtly, prior to the actual handover and it has been continuing ever since. The HK govt as well as the Central Govt ( China) thought they were so clever that nobody'd notice! But, surprise we have. The protesters have been remarkable in their determination to not give in, or to give up! I wonder why protests in America are so far and few between? There ought to be non stop planned protests against the current cretin-in-chief and this administration. To apathetic? To lazy? I can't figure it out!
Perhaps someone can explain it to me? If I'm not mistaken that's what was suppose to happen after this human was 'elected'.

RIXRADvids, you deluded stooge $hillary Bot; your support of her & her neferious rigging of the primaries brought us T-Rump !!! She never had a chance of beating the Donald, but Bernie could have wiped the floor w/ T-rump. Just because she couldn't accept her loss to Trump. we had to endure 2+ years of the Russia-gate dead end. DT did not need to collude during the election, he bent his knee to Russian oligarchs years ago, while laundering their money. Just coz HRC said that foreign interference was the main factor in her derailment, don't mean you gotta buy her wares. Think for yourself. Don't be a rube. She is dirtier than Don.

So Sanders is to be criticized for not coming up with new ideas... when the GOP guts health care and gives more money to the military. George Will constantly resorts to history to prove how well read and supposedly objective he is, but he only uses it to criticize the left and act as cheerleader and apologist for the right. the wide field of Dem candidates is a troubling sign that many think the nomination is largely all that will be required in 2020, and Trump's defeat is somehow a foregone conclusion.

03:36 *Defending "democracy" in Hong Kong? Those lawmakers were elected democratically by the people of Hong Kong, and the extradition bill was voted democratically.*
*The extradition bill specifies the criminal offences for which a criminal can be extradited to China, Macau, and Taiwan.* Other than the specified offences, the law enforcement agencies cannot, according to this bill, extradite a Chinese citizen of Hong Kong S.A.R. to Mainland China, Macau, or Taiwan.
    www.hklii.hk/eng/hk/legis/ord/503/sch1.html

*Currently, if a Chinese citizen of Hong Kong S.A.R. commits a crime in Taiwan, the perpetrator can return to Hong Kong, and Taiwan cannot do anything about it legally. And, it has happened. Does that sound right to anyone?*

*In early 2018, 19-year-old Hong Kong resident Chan Tong-kai allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend Poon Hiu-wing in Taiwan, proceeding to return to Hong Kong. Chan admitted to Hong Kong police that he killed Poon but the police were unable to charge him for murder or extradite him to Taiwan because no agreement is in place.[13] Until May 2019, the two ordinances in Hong Kong, the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance, were not applicable to the requests for surrender of fugitive offenders and mutual legal assistance between Hong Kong and Taiwan.[13][14] In February 2019, the government proposed changes to fugitive laws, establishing a mechanism for case-by-case transfers of fugitives by the Hong Kong Chief Executive to any jurisdiction with which the city lacks a formal extradition treaty, which it claimed would close the "legal loophole".[15]*

Things change without us realising that they do, we try to keep tabs of things but don't always manage to and that happened with news when television came in. Newspapers have opinion pages and opinions in their articules, anyway and they research the truth of any ideas that are being put out. Some how television news was meant to be just news without trying to influence the public in anyway which seemed to come to mean, without the news source researching the truth of what was said because to do so would be to have your own slant maybe. without people thinking, "That is crazy", If Trump say, or anyone else says something totally false, part of news should be to research it and explain why its not true.
Television news seems to think you have to say what Trump says and then talk of the the truth of it only if some other person happens to contradict it, when surely a journalist should resarech what is said and keep the people informed. It might be an exageration to say that television news seems to think it should report what has been said but not contradict it but it does seem as if that is a bit what their attitude to such things is.
Ordinary people dont have the time to cheque out the facts, they have other jobs they need journalist to do that twork. One problem was that the news channels did not at first seem to have any particular preferences in politics, while news papers were of one or other tendency, so then for news channels, if you contradict a polititian you seem to have lost your neutrality.
Another part of the problem is that journalists don't have the job of making it their business to keep the whole population properly informed, just to provide information to those who want to read it, so that if a political party with lots of money, and billionaires have so much money that they have it easy if htey want to be a public nuiscance and threat to the government, to democracy, gets to indoctrinate some part of the populations at grass roots level, the journalists don't feel they have to try to reach those people.
Traditionally they represented the ideas of the right or of the left, they did not try to keep things straight for the whole population, to do so would be totalitarian but now we have a problem, because the right reaches the poor, on the sly and persuades them to vote for the billionaire. The Koch brothers spend, presumibly more money than they admit to doing this, it hard to believe they really only spend a relatively small amount of money on their favourite occupation, at grass roots level and journalists are not finding a way keep the whole population properly informed.
I suppose it is government who should keep things straight when some part of the population is indoctrinating their people, not journalists, still jounalsists should try to inform everyone the journalists of the left should not hand things over to those of the right too easily. The religious too, like the Koch brothers, try to influence people iin poitics catholic militants here started to try to pull me to the right. evangelist and cahtolics have a very big following so if they want to interfere in politics they can be very powerful.

I think Martin's got it right. I think Mayor Pete would probably be the best candidate against Trump. There's a good chance the democrats would go this way, Obama became a media darling, and that's who they went for. The optics of Biden, Sanders, or Warren debating Trump are bad, it would just be two old people that are hard of hearing yelling at each other. I think Mayor Pete can keep his cool and make Trump's behavior look bad during a debate. I'll probably do the same thing I did in 2016, vote for Kasich in the primary if he runs, or Weld, and if Trump is re-nominated, then I'll probably vote libertarian. Voted republican for president every time before 2016, still vote for them for congress, but I'm not voting for four more years of temper tantrums.

Trump is a symptom of a global plague of the intellect, caused by technology and the persistence of our insecure dependence thereupon. Bari is correct to bring up Gutenberg, because that is the only other example we have from history of the fundamental global environment being altered by technology in such a way that it becomes impossible for an intellectually honest person to see today's history with yesterday's eyes. Gutenberg broke the papacy, and Zuckerberg broke the presidency. Neither was the target. In both cases, politics is just one aspect of a revolution that goes straight to the capabilities of the human mind. In the act of inventing the Free Press, Gutenberg released Prometheus from Tartarus and created the Independently Informed Proletariate as a social class.
As George Will said on today's show, there will always be empowered elites, and the question is how we select them.
The American Revolution was the natural and correct assertion of the Independently Informed Proletariate as the True Sovereign in both law and fact. Centuries of usurpation of the consulate and pontificate by criminals exactly like Donald Trump are what deprived us of our mind in the first place, and the same is proof of the fallacy of Authority. We are living in a pool of intellectual incest, and our stock is collapsing beneath our feet. We are currently engaged in the project of rendering ourselves incapable of learning. The paucity of our lineage and the impunity of our viruses are finally coming into contact and conflict with the unmoving deity that is evolution. Fate is fate, and our destination is where we are going. Truth will out, and weakness will fail. We are given the chance to be weak. We are taught to prefer that choice. It is only through sedition that we see our own reality. There can be no sedition when we share the same eyes. One hand can't clap, one genome can't persist, and one mind can't learn. Gutenberg released Prometheus. Henry Ford put him in chains. Donald Trump is the Christ of the machines. He is death's redemption. He is the Word of Dis, made flesh.
He is the Steward of Gondor.
He is an imposter and an impediment. He is not the eye.
    Sauron is the enemy.
    The ring must be destroyed.
Do not put it on your finger, friends.
    Twitter is not our fellow.

"We are living in a pool of intellectual incest, and our stock is collapsing beneath our feet. We are currently engaged in the project of rendering ourselves incapable of learning."

Maher had nothing to say after that crack about FDR? I'd gladly take FDR's 75-year-old ideas over anything the Republicans have come up with since.
