Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

  • Published on May 9, 2018
  • In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question."

Nutella cookies! Mix 180 g Nutella, 1 egg, 150 g flour and 1 teaspoon baking powder and work into a smooth dough. Form small balls and bake in the oven preheated to 180°C for about 8-10 minutes.

I know two people who can relate very well to her.
They too made a very useless thing and called it a failure.
These two people are my parents.
And I happen to be the usless thing.

The speaker is a great communicator because she was able to send her message clearly towards her audience. Her audience definitely understood her message based on their feedbacks. Moreover, she showed to the audience the wonderful things she invented which helped the audience to understand more the message she was conveying.

It’s interesting that you approach this from the perspective of engineering. If you take out the regular usability that engineering strives towards but succeed in having your creations fulfill another, but very meaningful purpose (like getting a message across), then you’re creating art.
If you haven’t already done so, please have a look at Jean Tinguely’s work, eg. usclip.net/video/Noe5-awlbfw/video.html ... I am quite certain that it will delight you.
