  • Aderson Torres

So what have we learned over time that was not known then, sweet spots, if you look closely he hit him in the temple. His head did not go to the side, it went backward. Maybe you looking at the wrong person and reason for the venue. Fighters were going to get paid the same whether they fought in Maine or MSG. The promoter lost over a quarter of a million dollars, maybe he owed the organization. All kinds of conspiracies. I do believe the punch knocked him the F out. Today we call it a glass jaw. Like I stated before, we have come a long way.

I will say, in the slo-mo you can tell the punch hit because of the ripple on Liston’s head. However I don’t think it was a hard enough punch to cause a KO, so I stand by that the hit connected but it was a fixed fight.

Hate to break it down to u guys ... but Liston did get hit hard and right on the kisser. Also, during the entire round, Ali had popped him 5 or 6 times with straight rights, while liston missed on everything he threw. The red was an idiot, and there's no mob involvement.

No phantom punch about it. Watch it full speed, then slo mo. How fast a deceptive the shot was coming over the top, hitting him right in the temple and then in the slo mo, watch Ali’s pectoral muscle ripple in reaction a perfectly timed, powerful hit. Case closed.

Ali had a right that was quick as lightning. Liston's head wiggled like a MMA fighter hit him on the button. It don't take much power to knock someone out if you hit em on the button. I think Ali's dominance was hard to appreciate at the time. He demolished the best with ease. It looked like Anderson Silva fighting a #6 overall. No competition.

Yeah that right cross definitely put him down for sure. The left hook doesn’t look like it landed but it’s hard to tell. That being said sometimes a fighter can get caught and go out by punches that don’t seem that powerful.

  • Deception Thundercracker

Something doesn't make sense to me. Why would the nation of Islam go after Liston, and threatened to end his life if he won against their underdog? Malcolm X was assassinated. And there were rumors of a possible assassination of Ali as revenge. However, anyone connected to the nation of Islam would be targeted, and that revenge would be completed. Also, do we have records showing Liston favored Malcolm X? It's funny to me why a group of people would threatened a man who had no connection to anything other than a fight to keep the heavyweight title

I mean the other guys head moved when Ali's hand look like it was pretty close to his head. The camera angle really is the worst.

You should’ve emphasised on how he recently became associated with the Nation of Islam, and some of the background activism stuff Ali was doing. You have to remember how common racism, and Islamophobia especially, was in the 60s. Ali wasn’t the legend he is now back then. People thought he was a bit cocky, he’s known for trash-talking his opponents

It's the front angle, you don't see the distance or true speed of a punch but what you do see is his face compressing from the impact, of course he could still have faked it but a shot like that has the potential to KO - it's the hits you don't see that affect you the most as your body doesn't prepare for it - there was also confusion with the ref

As a former amateur boxer I will say it is the punches you DON'T see that hurt you the most. Liston throws out a jab and doesn't pull it back quickly, Ali's right hand is initially blocked from view by Listons left arm. At the last moment, it rises and comes over the top of his arm and connects solidly. Liston NEVER saw the punch and didn't have his chin tucked and went to sleepy town.

So Ali isn’t One Punch Man?

  • Johno Hill
    Johno Hill 3 months ago

Ok. I boxed for 8 years so here's my educated view. You must know what to look for. 1) - Liston throws himself into a jab, and missed but his momentum was still going forward.Ali hit him with a fast, well timed punch it was confusing for even him. Ali always had a powerful right hand and it was made more so by Liston coming in.2) - You have to look at what happened at the point of impact a Violent jolt at the base of Sonny's neck.2 - At the point of impact, Sonny's left foot , lifted off the canvas

I'm not taking nothing away from the GOAT ali. But this fight with Liston is fixed.

  • Why?
    Why? 4 months ago +4

For those who think that Ali's knock out blow against Liston was weak, The punch Ali used in the video was what Ali called the "anchor punch" and this punch was so deceptively powerful because it was a counter to when people tried to jab at Ali's right side which made them extremely overextended and vulnerable, because of this overextension it allowed Ali to get a downward angle on his punch which made it far more powerful than it looks. This is compounded by the fact that Ali's "anchor punch" almost always landed squarely on the temple which is by far one of the best places to hit someone to knock them out. This doesn't even mention how in Liston's case he was so far overextended that his forward momentum also contributed to how hard the punch ended up being.

    • BacktoBack Jacks
      BacktoBack Jacks 26 days ago

That punch is a thing of beauty. So fast. So precise. Even watching in slomo Ali looks much quicker on his feet than Liston.

    • Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith 4 months ago +1

Why? The opponent also doesn't see it coming because his own extended jab obscures his view. Because of this he's unprepared for the impact of the punch.
