I built a PC for my grandma. It's a Dell Optiplex GX520 from 2005 with a Pentium 4 HT but it runs Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" and it runs very well. i've created a Linux Mint USB installer for free! I still like your videos.

The slowness of the PC in the beginning is basically as slow as my laptop I'm using right now. Acer Spin 3. My sister bought it as my 19th birthday present. She bought it for like $500, it was priced like this, just because of its convertible (can become a tablet when folded) and the touchscreen. It's so lame but thanks to this, i can use it for our programming and report presentation projects. The touch screen and the convertibility is just useless. I'm guessing if this has no touch screen support and non convertible, this would cost like $200 to $300.

For it to actually resurrect the old PC, I would expect it to fix the shenanigans that builds up over time on your existing operating system and optimize it for your use.e.g. disabled services for features of Windows you don't use, uninstall things you don't use, increase virtual memory, etc

I'm with Anthony in this one, actually, it would be a good product if they only add a small amount of price over the usb value. I am afraid that is what they intended but, as always, prices came from logistics more than production costs.

Lol so you’re telling me LTT doesn’t know the workaround in Windows 7 to shut down without installing updates?
Alt+F4 when on the desktop. Click the drop down menu, select shut down (it might be shut down without updating, can’t remember specifically).
Super easy and quick. I was mad when they got rid of that in Windows 10. It’s a pain in the ass to work around it in Windows 10. And every so often, your workaround gets patched by microshit. Luckily I got a free copy of Windows 10 Pro from school, and upgraded my home computer to that, and I can use local group policy editor to disable automatic shutdown for updates, but there is no workaround other that hard booting to shutdown without updating.
I’m still laughing that Linus or Anthony (two very intelligent people at LTT) don’t know about the easy workaround in win7. But if they ever see this, now they’ll know. Better to share knowledge than to just laugh at somebody for lack there of. Everybody has new things to learn every day.

I resurrected all my PC's with just a USB stick....after I used Balena Etcher to load the Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2. ISO image on it. This was no small feat for me being non tech-savvy. This version is so user friendy and so similar to grandmother could have used it. But now I am the grandparent and very very close to washing my hands of both Apple and Microsoft. Viva Linux!

    Long story short.
So it's basically a pre-installed bootable Linux OS on a USB stick and you pay 4 to 5 times more than the cost of the USB stick.
And also your old PC should be USB bootable AND your grandma should know how to go to BIOS and boot from a USB drive,

Or maybe just install Linux on the hard drive and not spend in a USB drive? Also it is faster.

  • Joel Guzman

Lets be honest here grandma was on win7 or xp like just a cheap ssd upgrade and a win 10 tool install would solve all her problems and that would run less than the usb since a good cheap 256 gig is like 40$
