Hey Scotty fyi those adapters just step down the 12v from the battery to 5v. No dc to ac conversion. Pretty weird that it stopped the car from working. Since there is no frequency in a dc current idk if it would leak a rf signal.

    Scotty:

About the USB adapters in cars....

Good advice. I avoid 'em, too....

However, some devices really want 110VAC, and while a "proper" adapter might work fine, it'd better be for 12VDC to 110VAC and a good one, or, at best, it's not going to work. The best time for them to fail is when you're just about to head out on a trip, and you can't get a replacement anytime soon....

In some cases you can find (or already have) a device that will do it's own "adapting", but they sort of expect you to do a little homework. Like knowing what you're powering it with, and whatever magic you're expected to do. I had a piece of ham gear in one of my cars that was all set for using both 110VAC _and_ 12VDC. However, you had to plug the filaments (right, TUBES) into the cigarette lighter (or some other 12VDC source) and about everything else into some kind of inverter good for about 200VDC. You were expected to switch on the "adapter" as needed (usually when transmitting), and let it either idle or be powered off when not transmitting.

I doubt if such things still exist, but dynamotors (a 12VDC motor that spun a little generator to provide whatever voltage you wanted). Hilariously inefficient, and noisy (not RF-noisy, just mechanical noise), but by the time I wanted to buy one, practically free....

    Regards,

    Stu.

Scotty I enjoy your videos...But you passed on some bad info. Any 5 Volt DC USB car charger has a simple voltage stepdown circuit inside. Usually they are composed of a common fixed or variable voltage regulator IC with a few resistors and capacitors, that's it. Basically, that regulator does two things implied by its name. It controls current flow at its output and drops the 12VDC input voltage down to 5VDC at the output so you can charge 5VDC devices without exposing them to either an over voltage or current situation. There is NO oscillator, NO inverter, NO crystal or any other circuitry to intentionally create any radio waves or alternating current (AC)...Why would you? The charger would be MUCH bigger that what you held in your fingers. I'm not arguing that one of these devices did or did not interfere as you say, just that your description of that charging device and its function were not correct. If any device emitted stray Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) as much as you imply, the FCC and auto manufacturers would be raising hell. Certainly the device would never get a UL approval.
I would also call into question your assumptions about what is known about radio waves or electromagnetic energy. If we are as stupid as you imply we'd still be using megaphones instead of radios with amplifiers and microphones. :)

Hello Scotty , for very long time i have been following your videos and it is really useful and i learn a lot from you
Since i design these things , i have few comments as an opinion :)

    * True cheap USB chargers cause problems , but i think the noise is transferred through the wires , you can see it if you have an oscilloscope , good USB Chargers have filters to stop such noise

    * Don't think DC to AC inverter in the car would be a good thing unless it is a small one 200Watts Max (= about 17A) , as it will draw too much current which will affect battery life (in creasing DOD decrease number of Cycles)

Once more thanks a lot for your videos , and i apologize for not being much of an active subscriber :)

Scotty. A V 8 engine is good.because the more cylinders a motor vehicle has the smoother and less vibration. The reason Ferrari has more cylinders in v12 is for reliability in racing to win. Not for more power. That depends on displacement. A 5.7 liter diesel v8 Cadillac eldorado gets better economy than a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder Mercedes. Mercedes is overrated. Some American cars were better built and great cars.

Really, DC to AC to DC? I figured the cheaper ones just did a simple DC voltage drop from 12V to 5V.🤔
I wonder if that's why the cheaper ones cause issues.

  • Russell Marsh
    Russell Marsh 15 days ago

You have to take a voltage drop from dc to ac. The coil is what creates an electromagnetic field, then a rectifier, finally a capacitor to discharge the dc into ac at a specific voltage. Which cannot exceed 6.5 volts due to the battery. UNLESS it has an amplifier, which even in small voltage amounts, can be much too big for your cig lighter. AC just means that the voltage fluctuates from negative to positive, and frequency is simply the time in which it takes a cycle to complete. (I think I've explained it right, I'm on pain meds currently lol)

Scotty, i have been a mechanic for 30 yrs and i don't know as much as you do.
Personally I'm tired of all the electronics on the cars especially the sensor system.
I had a 99 montana the refused to start. Now, i deffinately am not the brightest guy about the wiring diagnostics and probably messed the car up. But i put $700 in new part on this thing and it still refused to start. The montana has a wire that goes from the icm (ignition control module) to the rear crank sensor on the back of the engine. That wire lays on the heat shield of the exhaust manifold and gets burned up a lot. When it does, the bare wire shows and shorts out the icm. Is it possible that it would short out the computer also?
I'm asking because i have a 2000 Montana that runs pretty well.
Since I figured i ruined the car and i couldn't get any help, i stripped the good parts and junked the 99 Montana.
