Ladies and gentlemen, you may have to adjust the color of your is definitely a yellow strap! Haha...I didn't realize it would be so controversial. Pull up the Wiki shot of it and it's pretty obvious.
(You can also judge based on the brown underpieces that Link wears as a part of that outfit as well, plus the little laces in front at his neck...the hat to me was the most obvious, though)
Also, just to clarify: A lot of people are saying "It's obvious it's Fallen Hero because Link wakes up in a Reincarnation Chamber." Technically, you can't use that as evidence here because the "Hero is Defeated" division is specifically related to Link losing at the end of Ocarina of Time against Ganon, NOT the battles described in BOTW.
Lastly, a lot of people are mentioning the appearance of the "Mirror of Twilight" in the form of the "Fragmented Monument." And that's a really good point, however, if you look at the "Fragmented Monument" in BOTW, its design is pretty strongly different from the Mirror, in particular the writing in an ancient language around the rim of the circle.
Could the timelines have united and this is at the end of them? That's actually what I was hoping for as I researched! Sadly, I just didn't feel like there was enough evidence to support that. When I stopped to look at all the evidence together as well as how Eiji Aonuma was talking about this game leading up to its launch, it felt like the team INTENDED this to be a return to that first timeline while making nods to the other games.

Also, the reason it looks similar to the Fallen Hero timeline Links is because the Tunic of the Wild is an homage to the OG Link, the Hero of Hyrule from LoZ 1 and 2, which takes place in the Fallen Hero timeline.

In my opinion, I think the theory that BotW happens in all timelines in some way or form, that's why it has evidence for all 3 of them.

Just throwing it out there, but the reasons the Zora evolved is because they are a fresh water race. The only Zora who can survive in salt water are the ones from Termina.
But to back up the theory, The Hero of Legend does go sailing (at the end of the Oracle Games and the beginning of Link's Awakening). So that translation might be the correct one.

Hello! Please just read the first few sentences then you are free to go as you'd like. Thanks.
I think all the timeline splits merge back into
Why? Well, it would certainly explain all of the seemingly impossible to answer references in BOTW.
    First off!
I think that each timeline need to be renamed

    Child Era = Wisdom Era

    Adult Era = Courage Era

Fallen Hero Era = Power Era

    Because Child Era is the timeline that Link is sent back in time to live his childhood by Zelda (her wisdom);

    Courage Era is the timeline that Link prevails (thus, using his courage) *and Link is not sent back in time;

Finally, there's the Power Era, the timeline split where Ganon wins at the end of OoT (showing his true power)

Get where I'm going with this?
The Triforce has always been together in one piece in the end. Perhaps, BOTW is the end or the "end" is a zelda game that has yet to be released.
However, I'm sure you'll tell me:
"Well, that was never suggested by Nintendo and there's no evidence to support it."
I'll say, Yeah, you're right. Mind you though, nobody else's theory really makes sense, and Nintendo did put BOTW at the end of all timelines. Maybe it's just one timeline after the merge making it possible for BOTW to be at the end of each timeline split.
Maybe there's a Zelda game that will come out that will talk about a merge that comes before BOTW.
That's all I've got so far! Thank you.
(P.s. If Nintendo does take this route, it'll be easier for them to make games in the future, I would imagine.)
    *I'm on Reddit u/MasterMiki

by the way, haven't you noticed that arbiter's grounds is in breath of the wild? the location only exists in botw and twilight princess. how is that not "physical evidence," but a yellow stripe on a particular armor set is? not that i don't accept it as evidence, but it's quite a stretch compared to a unique location from one timeline appearing in breath of the wild. are you gonna say that arbiter's grounds is an "easter egg," but the yellow stripe is not? anyway my own personal feeling is no, they didn't keep track of the continuity since the beginning, and they don't care at all about the continuity. they only put it together into a timeline because people begged them to for years. the whole timeline is post hoc, which is fine but let's not kid ourselves. i think breath of the wild could be said to follow all the timelines. it's at least 10,000 years after everything else anyway. it's so distant from the other timelines that it's basically its own thing, which is frankly true for all the other games too except the ones which are explicitly stated to be sequels to other games, and i guess skyward sword which was considered to be the beginning of the timeline even during its development. but i don't think they put much thought into where, say, minnish cap fit on the timeline. on the other hand breath of the wild contains enough references to each of the 3 timelines that some people think they all converged prior to the events of BOTW. which sounds pretty reasonable to me. look at the lord of the mountain - he looks a lot like the sages from twilight princess, and he could be the reincarnated sage of water who ganondorf killed. i think he's symbolically connected to the sage of water in terms of his design and behavior. anyway, the fact that ganon appears in beast form doesn't mean that it's permanent, that he can't reincarnate as a human in the future. the fact that he showed up in beast form in botw doesn't link him to one timeline over any other, since the downfall timeline never implied that ganondorf permanently lost the ability to reincarnate as a human. and even if it did, that still wouldn't prove anything because you can't prove that calamity ganon is only capable of reincarnating as a beast, and the circumstances of the game seem to imply that he was trying to reincarnate as a human but got interrupted. the yellow striped hat proves even less, i agree it means something that the set "of the wild" has a certain appearance to it, but i wouldn't link that appearance to a particular timeline when it makes more sense that it's just paying homage to the first zelda games. it could easily just be an OG reference, not a statement about the continuity. it could be saying this is link's original clothing, there's no reason to assume that it's trying to canonize breath of the wild into a timeline that happens to have the same hat, especially considering most of the early games just got pushed into that timeline, and of course link's clothes look the same in the early games because he hadn't been redesigned yet.

    • Toxically Masculine
      Toxically Masculine 5 days ago

also, it's not that calamity ganon has no human form, you fight him in this monstrous form because he was reincarnating in a coccoon and got interrupted partway through. and also probably because they wanted a consistent theme or wanted assets they could reuse for all the main boss fights, lol. either way the game implies that the ganon you fight is not his real form, and the title "dark beast ganon" also implies that's not his "true form" either. i imagine they didn't want to have a simple one-on-one sword fight with a human, and more and more lately they're trying to distance ganondorf from the gerudo and make the gerudo into good guys because social justice warriors would criticize it for racism and sexism and so on. so i doubt we'll see gerudo ganondorf as the boss of a zelda game for a while, maybe not ever again. it's just too taboo at the moment, though hopefully that changes since those fights are so iconic. even in twilight princess they didn't show ganondorf interacting with any gerudo, it seems the gerudo don't exist at all in twilight princess, they seem to have gone extinct. in breath of the wild the gerudo do acknowledge that according to legends, ganon once "took the form" of a gerudo, but more and more they're sort of retconning ganon into some force of nature that just took a gerudo male as his incarnate form like one time. and in botw the gerudo champion implies that they're ashamed of their connection to ganondorf. so i imagine that's part of their motivation for having ganondorf appear in non-humanoid forms. i guess i'd call that the ultimate cause, but according to the game's story, the proximate cause is that, like sauron, ganon was rematerializing but got shut down before the process could be completed. zelda apparently stalled him for 100 years and then link came along and killed/sealed him away again. so he could only take the form of that dark red energy, "pure malice" i think they called it. there's not really any consistency in the downfall timeline either, in some of the games ganondorf takes a beastly form because he has the triforce of power and that's what he wants to appear as because it makes him stronger - in other games he takes a beastly form because he has no choice, etc. it's not like those all follow the same template. it's probably just a coincidence honestly. and since none of those games are really in the same genre/style, like a 3D engine with a controllable camera, having a big beast sprite for a boss makes a lot of sense. can't get very deep or complex gameplay in a 2D game with a sprite the same size as link. plus he'd be hard to see. the 3D element allows you to get away with having a boss of similar size to the player character. but look at all the 2D games, the bosses are almost always huge or at least are like sorcerors who stay very far from link so they're easy to see, and it's the magic surrounding them that telegraphs their movements, rather than the character sprites themselves. with ganon that would be lame so they make him a big boar monster whose movement telegraphs his attacks. and with the 3D games they want to get maximum bang for their buck so they have you fight multiple forms of ganon, but the ones that have the most emotional weight are the ones that let you fight human ganondorf, and they can only do that by taking advantage of the far greater amount of freedom in animation provided by a 3D engine and a vastly higher resolution, and a free camera of course.

There is a problem with this theory. I just cross checked Twilight Princess map and BOTW Map and they are very close, with only minor details added in BOTW, the general alignment of the maps, and some distances, but aside from that, they match. Using Hytale Castle, Gerudo Desert, Death Mountain and Kakariko Village (butchered the spelling), I found out the maps are pretty much the same aside from the above mentioned details. Here is the proof, TP:
    and BOTW:
Also NOT seen in the LOZ timeline, but the 2 other timelines is the Bokoblin. It is seen in Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and BOTW. I think BOTW is the nasty after effect of Colliding Realities. To add onto Bokoblins, the only time line they aren't in, the LOZ timeline, they do exist in the Timeline Neutral games of SS and OT, but if the LOZ timeline is where Link is fallen and there are not Bokoblins in that timeline, then that tells me that Ganon destroyed them cause he didn't need them (they are mostly pretty easy to kill and pretty dim witted anyway). Why would Ganon bring back what he has deemed useless? He doesn't need them at all in BOTW, there are plenty of other creatures for that. Lazalfols are only seen in the TP timeline, Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword. It doesn't make sense that BOTW would be on the LOZ timeline. Wind Waker doesn't have the same map, and I just checked the map of Link to the Past, the timeline that supposedly BOTW is linked to, and the map doesn't match at all. Death Mountain, Hytale Castle, and Gerudo all line up, but Kakariko Village is in the wrong place. Adventure of link is in another world altogether, and Link's awakening is not in line either. Link to the past also puts Kakariko in the wrong spot as well. If anything, BOTW resembles more of Twilight Princess rather than LOZ, but with things seen in LOZ and not Twilight Princess, BOTW is clearly a result of the disaster of reconverging timelines.

The game also makes about 1000 references that the battle this particular Link lost occurred about 100 years past, and in that battle the 4 divine beasts were used along with guardians as they were a millennia before to protect hyrule. None of this had to do with the original Ocarina of time battle, which had occurred many, many thousands of years before any of the lore in breath of the wild.

The glowing ember of twilight is clearly referring to A Link to the Past!!!
First of: It's mistranslation, so we have to assume that, if you say twilight or shadow world could be synonyms. Secondly: Glowing ember why or how could the twilight glow like ember? Because it's the golden world - like in A Link to the Past! The Shadow Realm once was the Golden World. (And I'm not referring to the Shadow Realm of Twilight Princess, they're both two different worlds!)

If link was defeated, why is there an entire timeline with him still fighting and winning?

    Hey matpat!
Was just playing botw champions dlc and got a shirt called the “island lobster shirt”. The description of the shirt says the hero of the winds used to wear this shirt! Wouldn’t that provide pretty solid evidence that botw takes place in the adult timeline?

I gave up on the timeline years ago. I say every Zelda is it’s own story in its own dimension of an infinite amount of dimensional cross sectional black holes in the galaxy of zeldon long long ago about a boy named link who has to overcome the boogie man named Ganon. The end

I'm not saying that matpat is wrong I'm just saying that maybe there's a timeline that's missing

i always thought botw was a tie in game, or at least a sequel to one. i think they should make a zelda game tying in the three timelines somehow. maybe have three links from each timeline meet each other because of a merging dimension going on or something like that. i think it would be really cool

This is ridiculous... It's light green and I can't adjust the colors to fool myself that it's yellow on my mobile...
