It may seem as though the attack vector is through compromised readers or websites. Unfortunately, once they have your numbers, they can do just about anything until you, or your card provider's automated system, flags the fraudulent charges. All the security in the world can't protect finances when the numbers are known.

the cards got skimmed and cloned more then likely. i highly doubt they had their cards stolen

  • Luigi A
    Luigi A 4 months ago

I think I can answer your question as to how this happened: card skimming; the physical apple card may not have any account information printed on it, but it sure still does have a magnetic stripe on its back where information is stored unencrypted, and it is therefore just as prone to skimming as any other credit card.
It is obvious somebody skimmed those employees’ apple cards because they had to use their physical card at some place where not only apple pay wasn’t accepted, but there was probably only a magnetic stripe reader to process payments (unbelievably, many merchants in the US still do that). I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of those employee’s apple card was skimmed at Home Depot, the merchant shown on the screenshots, since that is one of the places that continues to hold out of accepting apple pay or any other form of contactless payment as do Walmart, Kroger, Publix and many others. And if that happens, I’d say it’s the merchants’ fault for forcing customers to use a physical card. I hope this sends a signal to all thiose apple pay hold outs to stop holding out. If not, all we consumers can do is vote with our wallet stop shopping at those places that don’t care if our cards get compromised.
Also, I think the idea of not having any information printed on the card. was only intended for added protection at sit down restaurants in the US. Since they simply refuse to stop taking the customers’ cards out of their sight, they’d better get a card without any information on it for payment. And that’s a US only problem. restaurants in the rest of the world have long since been using wireless standalone POS terminals and stopped taking away any cards. Restaurants in the US still prefer to sacrifice the customers’ security to keep their integrated POS systems, and will probably continue to do so unless a regulation requires them to change.

It is because Apple needs a third-party to process the payments. That is why they have a bank partner with them. So your data is subject to hacking through multiple avenues.

Most closely guarded secret of Apple: Apple users are getting hacked like crazy for a few years now. Their email, their bank acct, their iTunes acct.
Prime reason I removed my bank card from Apple and only added Paypal and set up a dummy email (real but I don't use it for anything else) account to be used for my Apple ID and my password was almost an entire paragraph.
My bank card got compromised 3 times in 6 years and it was thru cracking my Apple ID and password.
Word of a warning folks: If you got an Apple ID and use an iphone or anything Apple:
    - Don't use your main email address
-Dont' add your checking acct bank card
You are a prime target for hackers, because owning an Apple ID means to hackers, that you got money to spend, since most likely you got a $1K phone or a $3k macbook etc.

I don’t get why the employee wouldn’t just go to apple with this issue.the card is still in beta so there are bound to be flaws but it wont solve anything if the guy is talking to you instead of apple. That’s how i see it.
